James Williams, CSW Director
In addition to being the director of the New York Counseling Service, Mr. Williams is a Clinical Social
Worker with practices in Manhattan and Westchester County. With nearly 30 years experience in clinical work
he has treated clients with anxiety disorders, depression, alcoholism and alcohol abuse, relationship and
employment problems, and problems stemming from emotional and physical childhood abuse.
Mr. Williams was trained in individual psychodynamic psychotherapy at The National Institute for the
Psychotherapies in New York City and in group psychotherapy at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health,
also in New York City. He uses a growth oriented approach to therapy which aims to locate the influence of
the past so that those connections can be broken and the client freed to live more fully in the present.
When appropriate, he uses deep relaxation techniques as an adjunct to treatment. He also strongly endorses
involvement in 12-step programs.
"A therapist's empathic understanding is a requisite for successful treatment. A therapist must have the
ability to listen and to sense the pain the client is expressing. Without this emotional attunement,
treatment invariably falls short of its possibilities."
