Problems of Aging
In the later years of life, the aged are vulnerable to specific pressures. Retirement deprives the individual
of the structure that work provides: time schedule, where the job provides a reason to be at a specific place
at a specific time; social belonging, where co-workers expect you and accept you. Wages, that help one feel
worthwhile. Diminishing physical competence, including memory losses, aphasias, decreasing strength and sexual
competence – are additional burdens in age and
can lead to elderly depression.
Real and serious medical problems are often encountered and
require competent attention and communication between medical caregivers and psychotherapists. Death of
loved ones, elderly depression, loss of friends and family plague the ageing. Retirement, divorce, and estrangement – all plague
the older patient.
The senior years can be as "golden" as they are often poetically portrayed. Psychotherapy can be an
essential aid in being able to live the senior years that way.
