Relationships
O', how the spring of love resembleth
the uncertain glory of an April day!
Shakespeare, Two Gentlemen of Verona.
Often referred to as marriage and family
counseling, psychotherapy is a highly effective means of resolving
relationship problems. Whether the parties involved are a married couple, an unmarried couple,
an unmarried couple seeking premarital counseling, a same sex couple or a family
with children, psychotherapy can have a major impact on the interpersonal conflicts that inevitably arise
when two or more people share the same nest.
In many cases, a successful resolution will improve the relationship
of the persons involved and can substantially improve the future course
of the relationship. In some cases, relationship
counseling may lead to a separation. In the
case of sexual conflict or issues such as pornography or sexual
addiction, a sex therapist can assist. Sometimes the couple can profit from referral to a
divorce mediator. If all parties agree in the course of
treatment, this kind of referral can be made.
If you suspect that you or a couple you know could use
couples counseling or the intervention of a professional therapist due to
their relationship or marriage problems try the following quick test:
- Do you frequently feel anger at your partner?
- Do you fight a lot?
- Do you often feel that you are "giving" in to your partner in order to maintain the peace?
- Is your relationship "difficult"?"
- Are you or your partner cheating?
- Do the kids have behavioral problems - either at home or at school?
- Do you have difficulty "talking" to each other?
If you answer yes to any of the above questions you may want to consider the possibility that couples
therapy might be helpful.
